Sophomore quarterback Ben Dressman shook off two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown, to throw two touchdown passes and run for the game-winning touchdown, all in the fourth quarter, to spark Covington Catholic to a 26-17 come-from-behind victory over Ryle Saturday afternoon.
CovCath (5-2) trailed 17-0 heading into the fourth quarter after Ryle junior Gavin Brandt returned a Dressman interception 46 yards for a third-quarter touchdown. Dressman then passed 25 yards to Logan McDowell for a TD on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut the Ryle lead to 17-7 and on the next possession hit Sam Hatter with a 17-yard TD pass to cut Ryle’s lead to 17-13 with 7:38 remaining. CovCath forced a quick three-and-out and got the ball back following a punt on its own 31-yard line with 6:54 left. The Colonels marched to the game-winning touchdown in a little over two minutes with Dressman racing the final 15 yards to put them on top 19-17 with 4:30 left.
CovCath, which added a final TD on Sam Dressman’s one-yard run, had 14 first downs in the second half after being held to three in the first half.
